The thoroughbred of Porto

I met Dirk Niepoor t at a Rolling Stones concer t in Porto in August 2006. It was equally fascinating to see his enthusiasm for the music as well as to listen to Mick Jagger, who with his energy was capturing tens of thousands of people.

On the following day, I went to visit the historical site of the Niepoort winery in Vila Nova de Gaia. I never felt like this before: it was like having your hear t in the past and your feet in the present, a true time split.

For Por to wine time is everything, and in that cellar for the first time in my life I felt the presence of Time.

With five generations of Porto wine behind his shoulders carried with lightness, Dirk, like a Lusitanian thoroughbred, has known how to bring commercial freshness into his company, without adulterating the taste and the wisdom of time.

In his cellars are hundreds of pipas, the typical long 700-liter casks, which contain some of the most exciting Vintage I have ever tasted.

Choosing was not easy. Each had a very long memory of Tawny left to oxidize for dozens of years.

In the end I decided for those casks containing an extraordinary Colheita from 1991.

Now they are in the cellar of my own distillery in Schiavon, to enrich this memorable Grappa with unique aromatic notes.

Barili di Porto

Single-vintage Grappa,
aged 2 years in barrique
+ 6 months in Niepoort Port barrels

A journey, a face, a proposal, a smile.

That is how these collaborations were born with three prestigious brands, thus giving origin to three Grappas with different and fascinating aromatic sensations: red fruit, dried fruit, exotic fruit, candied fruit.
